Export PTS (Ascii) XYZRGB via PTS to Meshlab

Converting simple data in the world of pointclouds and all these advanced programs is usually quite tricky.

Just in case anybody needed, here’s a trick to get from common .PTS or .TXT ASCII XYZIRGB to Meshlab.

- Meshlab won’t import any ASCII XYZRGB data directly.
- You can import XYZ data, but you won’t keep the color.

  1. I have a PTS file with XYZIRGB (common laser scanning dataset)
  2. I Save it using Alice Labs Studio Clouds to ASCII .PTS format containing XYZRGB (no intensity). You can save to .PTS with XYZIRGB and strip it down using text processors to get rid of I = Intensity
  3. Import to Geomagic Studio as a .PTS file. Since there is no intensity, Geomagic will display color properly.
  4. Export to OBJ
  5. Import directly to Meshlab
